The American Eskimo Dog, also known as the “Eskie,” is a breed with roots tracing back to Germany. The breed’s ancestors were German Spitz dogs, brought to America by German immigrants in the late 19th century. The breed was originally used as a performing dog in circuses due to its intelligence, agility, and striking appearance. The name “American Eskimo Dog” was adopted in 1917 to distance the breed from Germany during World War I.
Appearance
American Eskimo Dogs are known for their beautiful, fluffy white coats. They have a fox-like face with erect triangular ears and a well-plumed tail that curls over their back. Their eyes are almond-shaped and usually dark, providing a striking contrast against their white fur.
Behaviour
The Eskie is known for its friendly and intelligent nature. They are highly trainable and excel in obedience training. Eskies are also known for their alertness and make excellent watchdogs. They are energetic and playful, enjoying activities that challenge their mind and body.
Health
Generally, American Eskimo Dogs are a healthy breed. However, they can be prone to certain health issues like hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and dental problems. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian and a healthy diet can help maintain their well-being.
Coat
The coat of the American Eskimo Dog is double-layered, with a dense undercoat and a longer outer coat that is soft and fluffy. This breed’s coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and to keep it looking its best. Despite its luxurious appearance, the coat is relatively easy to maintain with regular brushing.
